A Guide to Health Nutrition

You health should be one the most important things about your life becuase it determines your longevity. Your body is the instrument that allows you to perform any physical activity in your daily life, so why not take extra special care of it and your health as well.

Health nutrition is an aspect which is broad and contains many topics.  It ranges from your diet and what goes into your body to how much you exercise physically.

Health Diet Nutrition

This topic is extremely important for our body and well being.  Food is what provides our bodies with energy throughout the day and so it is important to learn what foods benefit the bodies the most.  If you put the wrong foods in your body, it can affect your health, energy, and your offspring as well.

Of the many different categories of health, nutrition is without a doubt the most important.  Eating healthy is the cornerstone to a healthy life and is crucial to survival throughout your life.

Just because you choose to eat wisely does not mean you cannot enjoy your favorite foods.  It just means that you have to choose your foods carefully so that you can get the correct amount servings from all of the food groups. Eating a variety of foods such as fruits, vegetables, grains, and dairy will ensure you are getting full nutrition.

Maintaining a healthy body weight is important for you to know with health nutrition. Not only will you benefit with a great looking body, but you will feel better mentally and emotionally.  You will have more energy and feel much about yourself.

Getting Advice

If you find yourself really needing the help of a nutritionalist or a dietician, go and seek one so they can work with you personally to keep you on track to eating the correct foods because you do not want to stray from a diet because you do not have the will power to resist the urge of tempting foods.

Having a diet doesn't mean you cannot enjoy yourself while eating, you will just have to research the many great healthy foods and meals that are out there.  You do not have to strictly stay will vegetables.   Having a personal trainer would not be a bad idea either because exercise goes great with dieting nad eating healthy.

Protein Supplements Should Be Part Of Your Sports Nutrition

If you are one of those ill-witted who perceive athletes as gods who don't need to stop to take in air, or to relax when there is need for relaxation, then perhaps it would be much of a disappointment to you to find out that athletes are not so different from those who are not athletes for they also make use of supplements to get them going.

It is part of their diet to take in supplements to have an enhancement of their endurance, and also to increase or, if not increase, maintain the appropriate muscle mass to be able to improve size and strength.

Protein supplements should be part of sports nutrition, without these said sports nutrition supplements; athletes would not be the way they are at present. However, contrary to what most people think, diets jam packed with protein do not necessarily build up muscle strength.

Building up muscle strength would be the job of regular physical activity. So if you want those big muscles you have to do exercises, not necessarily at gyms but could be also at your residences, daily. Doing so not by the day would not be producing the same result if you do so daily.

Sports nutrition supplements need high levels of protein, which you can get from protein-rich foods and enumerating all will be a total waste of space in this article.

But to enlighten you, here are a few of the foods that are rich in protein. There is fish, poultry and dairy products,and these are the foods you usually get your protein from because some sources of protein are high in fat and also in calories. So basically, you must take note which sources are high in fat and which are not.

Yeah, sports nutrition supplements sound so good but they can also put a strain on your liver and kidneys, which is the main reason why sports nutrition experts discourage taking them.

Some other sports nutrition supplements also have high amounts of nitrogen, which will only be excreted from your body as urea. But it is not as easy nor is it as safe as it sounds for this said excretion often causes fluid imbalance, which will then lead to dehydration.

There is also a higher risk of heart disease due to the high fat intake associated with sports nutrition supplements that have high amounts of protein from animal sources.

Another disadvantage of sports nutrition supplements is that there is a huge tendency that you will ingest amino acids that are capable of interfering with other amino acids, which will have a result of a metabolic imbalance.

Sports nutrition supplements that have high amounts of amino aids can also cause gout; diarrhea and stomach cramping that can rank from mild to severe pain.

Even if sports nutrition supplements are being discouraged by sports nutrition experts, Bricker Labs, a sports nutrition supplement manufacturer, still do a lot of advertising and manufacturing as well.

Bricker Labs has over thirty years to blame for their success in their provision of sports nutrition supplements. They do not apply to sports nutrition only too, but also to weight loss, diet, health and other nutritional aspects.

So if you have plans to take any kind of sports nutrition supplements, then Bricker Labs is probably the sports nutrition supplement manufacturer to trust. Why? It is because they use ingredients that are safer than what other sports nutrition supplements contain. What kind of ingredients, you ask?

They make use of the L-Carnitine, which is mainly there for weight loss, energy and also for having a healthy heart function; Colostrum, which gives your body a healthy immune system function and also gives your body an improved stamina and also for an easier recovery in almost all cases; Vandayl Sulfate, which is capable of growing your muscles and also has the ability to define your muscles; Protein, everyone knows what protein is for and that is for sports nutrition, and also for health and muscle growth.

Another is the Creatine, which is also for sports nutrition and muscle growth but it also involves bodybuilding this time; HCA or Garcinia Cambogia, for losing weight and suppressing your appetite; and last but certainly not the least, Vitamin B-12, this one is for overall health and nutrition.

So what more could you ask for? Sports nutrition supplements give you what you need, what your body needs and boosts your ego all the same time.

Do Americans Know What Nutrition Is?

The state of your health depends largely on your lifestyle and the food that you eat. If you do not eat well, your body will not be able to function perfectly and you can easily become sick.

According to studies, more than 50% of the people in the United States do not eat a balanced diet. It's not that Americans do not know what nutrition is, it's that most Americans choose junk food and processed foods because they are cheaper and more convenient than healthy food.

In other words, knowing about nutrition is not really the problem, but rather the way we choose our food. What people need to realize is that your health is the most important thing in your life.

Life is not meant to be lived at the frantic pace many people follow. An important aspect to getting the right nutrition and being healthy is trying to find ways, such as yoga or meditation, to slow yourself down and reduce stress.

How To Learn About Nutrition

Eating right is very important if your want to stay healthy and strong. Your understanding of nutrition should start with getting acquainted with the difference between whole foods and processed foods.

Then learn about the nutrition benefits of organic food as opposed to "grocery store" food as well. You will be able to find all of this information at a book store or online by looking the info up on google or yahoo.

Plan Your Meals

Having a good grasp of what nutrition is all about will help you plan out your meals. If you are one of those people who is always on the go, than you need to take the time to plan your meals in advance. You will not be able to find healthy food at the mini-mart or the drive thru so plan ahead.

When planning your meals, make sure that your diet consists of primarily organic fruits, vegetables, nuts, and/or meat if you choose. You can find these at your local health food store. Some chain grocery stores are also starting to carry organic food so keep an eye out for them there too.

Our society has become so out of touch with health and the importance of proper nutrition. Most of the processed food people eat on a daily basis has no nutritional content whatsoever and is contributing to the absurd rates of disease, obesity, and sickness in this country. It needs to stop. Start making the right choices when it comes to your health and nutrition.

Important of Nutrition

Important of Nutrition

Nutrition is essential to men's health. Good nutrition can put a stop to many health problems, including becoming overweight, developing weak bones, and developing diabetes. All the foods that have all the important nutrients will help your body grow.

Men's body prospers on certain nutrients that work together to promote growth and development. There is no specific nutrient or group of nutrients that is more important to a men's health well-being.

Nutrition is a science that examines the relationship between diet and health. Dieticians are health professionals who specialize in this area of study, and are trained to provide safe, evidence-based dietary advice and interventions. Nutrition science investigates metabolic and physiological responses of the body to diet. Many common diseases and their symptoms can often be prevented or alleviated with better nutrition.

The science of nutrition attempts to understand how and why specific dietary aspects influence health. Nutrition is all about the study of food and how our bodies use food as fuel for growth and daily activities.

The Five Most Important Nutrients

  1. Calcium: the richest mineral in the body, that helps in the development of bone growth.
  2. Protein: is another important nutrient in health diet.
  3. Fiber: is needed for body for good nutrition and healthy growth
  4. Antioxidant nutrients: are vitamins C and E, beta-carotene, and the mineral selenium Antioxidant nutrients are known to help immune system.
  5. Iron: is also very important to a child's diet. Your body depends on iron to get bigger and stronger. Iron also helps in brain development and function

There is no specific nutrient or group of nutrients that is more important to health, than these five nutrients I am about to mention to you right:

Good Nutrition Can Lead to Desired Weight Loss

Good Nutrition Can Lead to Desired Weight Loss

 Personal body image invariably involves how we view our physical selves, and how we perceive others see us.

 We are constantly bombarded with advertisements, depicting perfectly-proportioned men and women, who seem to be enjoying themselves tremendously.  The message:  if only you could control your eating habits you could live the good life too.

 Good nutrition, as it applies to our daily lives means that we take in what we need, to maintain our body's healthy state.  Nutrition has become an important word thanks to the involvement of the USDA in our daily food requirements, and the FDA's involvement in determining what is, and is not, dangerous for us to consume.

 What about eating habits?  What roles does our daily intake play in our health?  The body's ability to remain well, under anything other than ideal conditions is a direct result of the nutrition received on a daily basis.

 How do we determine that we are providing the essential nutritional needs?  That knowledge comes by educating ourselves about what our individual needs are, the needs of our family, and then taking that knowledge and applying it to the foods we buy, that we prepare, and that our families consume.

 Health is taught as a science course.  Little individual attention is given to how to attain optimal health via our eating habits.  It's funny that we skip the most important, fundamental building block to good health:  our nutritional and caloric consumption in our food.

 The body's metabolism is a unique process for each individual person.  No two people metabolize food at the same rate; therefore no two people have the same metabolism.  We all use our calories at different rates, with different results.  Our metabolism, like our fingerprints is unique to each of us.  But the need to understand and accommodate this metabolism is an issue that we all face.

 The dictionary defines metabolism as the sum of all biochemical processes involved in life, or the sustaining of life.  In application, concerning our health, metabolism is related to the intake and use of food.  In reference to the case in point, it is our ability to utilize our food to the fullest extent.

 Right now, the greatest results in raising our metabolism come from exercise and building our muscle mass, while reducing our body fat.  Adding more muscle to the body, in turn causes us to burn more calories, and this helps to elevate our metabolic rate.  Muscle tissue, per cubic gram burns calories at twice the rate of fat, per cubic gram.

 Our metabolism functions also depend on how well we have taken car of our nutritional needs.  Some people have really high rates of metabolism.  In other words, when they consume food, their bodies burn it up almost as fast as they consume it.  Then there are those of us who use our food intake so slowly, as to not even notice that we're burning calories.  These people who burn quickly are often slim and trim, the people who burn more slowly are the people with the tendency toward obesity.

 For years, people have sought ways to raise the metabolic rate.  If you can raise someone's metabolic rate, you are then better able to control the burn of calories especially for overweight or obese people.  This would make the goal of better or improved health a much easier reality for these people.  Efforts to date have produced very little results.  There are food that we can consume that naturally raise our metabolic rate, but not to a great extent.  What we need is a way to directly alter the rate.  We need to be able to raise our metabolism to a point where we can actually see a benefit.

 There is where the effort to stay physically fit and active provides tremendous payoff.  Over the course of your life, if you stay active, exercise, and maintain optimal health for your muscles, you will see a tremendous difference in the rate that your body metabolizes food.  As people age, their metabolism quite naturally slows down.  The greatest way to prevent this from happening is through exercise and staying fit.

 The best way to date to control our metabolic process is through proper nutrition, daily exercise, eating foods known to have an effect on our metabolic rate, and plenty of rest.  The metabolic process can be indirectly controlled by these methods.

 If we can understand that a pound of fat represents 3500 calories, then it's simple mathematically to see, that a 500 calorie reduction per day, will result in a one pound loss per week.  An increase in exercise and a decrease in daily caloric consumption will result in the desired weight reduction, over time.

Healthy Living, Fitness and Nutrition - The Role of Diet in Health and Fitness

Improving the quality of life through health and nutrition involve following a diet pattern and adequate levels of nutrition to prevent diseases and maintain physical fitness. Issues of malnutrition would be related to deficiencies of vitamins or nutrients and intake of supplements form an important part of disease prevention strategy and helps in improving energy levels (Papers4you.com, 2006). The use of supplements in disease conditions such as high cholesterol levels has been studied to understand the positive and negative impact of dietary supplements on the health of individuals. For instance, vitamin A deficiency can be a major public health concern and many countries implement strategies to prevent such deficiency cases (Whiting et al, 2006). Vitamin C or ascorbic acid can be detrimental when deficient or in excess and recommended doses of Vitamin C have been given by various countries. Public health authorities across the world encourage individuals to change their health status by adopting new behaviors such as giving up smoking or changing dietary patterns. Apart from vitamins and minerals, fatty acids play an important role in modulation and prevention of diseases. However, maintaining a strict dietary pattern and fitness regimen could be explained with the help of social control and cultural values. Fitness levels are determined with measures on speed, strength and flexibility of athletes or even ordinary individuals and energy costs are directly related to nutrition, diet, exercise and physiology (Papers4you.com, 2006). In this context the relevance of the gym culture may be studied as the gym going motivation may be similar to the motivation to follow a strict diet pattern and this in turn have an impact on general health and fitness levels (Bull, et al 2006). This is because any kind of rigorous physical exercise brings about thermo regulation that facilitates heat loss and regulates internal body temperature.
One of the important issues in nutrition and health studies would be prevalence of diseases and diet patterns and lifestyle have a direct impact on the health status of individuals. Smoking for instance has been related to lung cancer and heart disease by analyzing data on mortality rates, smoking habits, lung cancer and coronary heart disease and the health benefits of quitting smoking have also been established in several studies (Saijo, 2006).
An important topic of nutrition studies is life expectancy and health and disease in the elderly. The problem of malnutrition is increased during old age as the elderly may have inadequate diet and poor mobility that prevent them from following a recommended diet pattern. In certain cases, poor nutrition can lead to chronic conditions and poor physical mobility and the elderly would thus need specific interventions and effective treatment patterns. General studies on gender variations in life expectancy and illnesses have shown that women tend to live longer than men but also tend to report illnesses more than men (WHO, 2000).

Do you Know the Benefits of Nutritional Supplements?

Nutritional supplements are one of the important things we can do for the overall health of our mind and body. Ideally, the sources of vitamins, minerals and nutrients are the food we take but sometimes due to faulty eating habits and improper diet there arises some gap in our nutritional requirements. We must know the role of nutrition in our proper health. Basically nutrition refers to the nurturing of our body, in our ability to keep it healthy and functioning as it is supposed to do. So it is very essential to take care that our nutritional requirements are properly fulfilled.

Also due to modern processing and farming methods, foods that should be high in certain nutrients no longer are. Another culprit in the nutrition depletion of foods is our food cooking and preparation. Like these there are many other factors contributing to the poor nutrient content of our foods.

Few latest researches have reported that due to environmental stress there is an extra burden on our immune systems. The best way to counter the stress on our body's health caused by all of these toxins and such is to support our body with proper nutrition. Since our foods are nutrient depleted, the only way to properly support our health is through nutritional supplements.

Others have turned to nutritional supplements in order to enhance everything from their workout regimes to their memory and mental functions. Taking vitamins and other nutritional supplements is a good way to be certain we get all the proper vitamins and minerals you need daily.

If you're still uncertain as to whether you should take a nutritional supplement each day, ask for your doctor's advice. This is particularly true if you're on any prescribed medications. It is possible for some supplements to decrease the efficiency of some prescribed medicines and to interact with them, causing unwanted side effects.

Vitamins for Proper Nutrition

The human body needs all the nourishment it can get to maintain good health and most likely live longer. Nutrition plays a big role to this effect. The kind of food you take in and their effects on your health constitute nutrition. It can either be good or bad. The right foods are those that contain the key nutrients. This is a vital part of our general health and fitness. Failure to get proper nutrients is tantamount to malnutrition.

If you don't get many nutrients from the foods and drinks your taking in there is always the ever-handy vitamins. The pills that you pop up into your system provide some insurance against deficiencies but are not exactly the most important for health than the healthy foods found in markets.

Vitamins sort of close the gap between what we eat and what our bodies necessitate for optimum health. Otherwise without the right nutrients our body would be unable to function well to maintain and sustain life. According to Vita Nutrition Health basically our food should contain the right carbohydrates, fats, proteins, vitamins, minerals and water.

But trying to balance between how much vitamins the human body can take for proper nutrition can be dizzying. The trick is eating a healthy diet. Supplement it with a daily dose of a multivitamin that you need the most. An extra Vitamin D or E is a sure way to getting all the nutrients a body needs to be healthy. Or maybe folic acid to lower the chances of getting breast cancer, it also may lower the risk of heart disease.

But do not get overwhelmed with vitamins. People who adhere to a balanced diet can have all the minerals and vitamins from the food they eat and liquids they drink. So sticking to a recommended standard dosage is ideal. Proper nutrition can still be maintained and some risk factors are eliminated in the process.

Avoid high doses of some vitamins unless necessary. The standard dose will suffice to get nutrition benefits. But Vitamin D can be an exception in some cases as there are people who need mega doses more than the RDA. With vitamins do not be misled. The ones you see being advertised on TV or the Internet claiming health benefits can be too good to be true. Be wise. Don't go overboard spending so much for something you can have an option.

There are foods, which contain more vitamins and minerals than other foods. So take note of the benefits of vitamins and minerals and the deficiencies caused by a lack of them, as Vita Nutrition Health will admonish.

Healthy eating begins the moment man is conceived. From the womb to infanthood to teenage and to adulthood, nutrition has always been an essential part of life. If food is scarcely taken vitamins too fill in the void due to lack of healthy foods.

Nutrition is one man's basic needs. The need to maintain and sustain life through good health is a right that should not be taken away from any human being.

The Benefits of Reaching Optimum Health Nutrition

Because of advances in technology, many of us have sedentary jobs, sitting before desks and computers all day long, before driving home or commuting by bus or train. In between work and travel we tend to eat whatever convenient foods we happen to have on hand. Gone are the days when we walked two miles to work in the morning, two miles home in the evening, and we actually broke a sweat as we labored for our wages. When we got home; it was always to a meal that offered optimum health nutrition.

The State of Child Health and Nutrition

Obesity, including childhood obesity, is one of the biggest problems in the world today. Statistics show that our children will cost billions in healthcare expenses because of obesity in years to come. Fifty years ago, kids played tag and football and softball in streets and in parks for hours on end. Nowadays, kids of the same age sit in front of the TV, play video games or chat online. Kids used to walk to school; that's often thought of as too dangerous today, and instead they are driven in a carpool. The only exercise they may get is an hour a week of PE at the school gym. Child health and nutrition is not what it once was.

Because of advances in medicine, we find ourselves looking for easy options to avoid exercise. Easy options - the advent of consumer choice in the last half century - also mean that our diets are worse than ever. Because of medicines, we are confident that we can stuff our faces now and there'll be pills or shots that can be taken later in life that will fix whatever problems we're causing today.

However, optimum health nutrition is important today regardless of medical technology. Quality of life (attaining a work life balance, for example) is a cherished notion in contemporary culture. Good diets are an effective way to improve quality of life today, rather than piling on pound after pound through bad living before finally opting for dramatic weight loss surgery ten years from now.

Eating well through optimum health nutrition will improve quality of life almost immediately. Cutting down on the food groups that you gorge on and increasing the types of food you usually avoid will balance out a person's diet, providing more energy and enabling weight loss with greater ease than mere exercise will provide.

Balanced diet is all well and good, but what about exercise? If you've decided to make a few simple lifestyle changes to improve your health, such as cutting down on caffeine, dairy, fatty and sugary foods, and increasing intake of protein and vitamin rich vegetables and fruit, you will find any exercise that you do less difficult too. Those hated morning jogs or the brisk afternoon walks won't seem as painful, and you might even have enough energy to enjoy them.

Tips for Optimum Health Nutrition

You can get tips from your local doctor or your nutritionist about optimum health nutrition. These specialists will be able to tell you which foods are best at reducing weight and which foods will burn quicker when you exercise. Optimum health nutrition won't seem that difficult after all.

Health Nutrition Vitamin

If health and nutrition are at the top of your priority list (as they should be for all of us), a good vitamin supplement will provide you the best chance to attain optimal levels of both.

The challenge is this: Most people don't really know what a good vitamin is. Is it one of the many popular, over-the-counter drugstore vitamin supplements available on the market? Absolutely not. In fact, this type of daily vitamin (including multivitamins) can actually cause more harm than good. They are full of jagged little non-food rocks that can tear up the walls of your sensitive inner tissues, capillaries, and blood cells. They are not naturally recognized by the body as nutritional, and are eliminated as quickly as possible. In short, they simply end up as expensive urine.

Most of us who have taken these synthetic, macro-produced vitamin supplements have also been privy to discolored, neon-like urination and foul-tasting "vitamin burps." This stuff is fake, and your body knows it.

For extraordinary health & nutrition, make your vitamin supplement an all-natural, whole-food option. There is a world of difference! Because these supplements are derived from healthy plant sources (i.e. grasses, grains, stems, leaves, vegetables, roots, fruits, and berries), they are easily recognized and assimilated by your body. This gives you instant nutrition, and if the vitamin supplement is of a high enough quality, you'll feel absolutely incredible!

With an optimal, health-focused nutrition supplement, you will:

  • Acquire Explosive Energy!

  • Lose Weight Effortlessly!

  • Gain A Positive, Loving Attitude Toward Life!

  • Be the Proud Owner of Radiant Skin, Hair, and Nails!

  • Have Incredible Peace of Mind Knowing That You're Preventing Disease and Boosting Your Immune System!

  • Look and Feel Fantastic ALL THE TIME!

There are many wonderful whole-food vitamins on the market. Most of them are available online, while others can be found at your local health food store. A good multivitamin full of phytonutrients, nutritional b vitamins, amino acids, probiotics, fiber, protein, and chelated minerals is ideal.

If you'd like to check out my personal recommendation, CLICK HERE and see if you think it's right for you. If you decide it's not, please don't stop searching for something that is. It is critical that you supplement your diet with healthy, nutritional whole-food vitamins. Critical.

A daily Green Drink regimine is also highly recommended.

Women and Their Nutrition...very Important to All of Us!

Many of our readers asked for simple nutrition tips for women. Women today are busier than ever before. Their stress is exacerbated by today's fast paced, pre-packaged, convenience based society and the toxins that come from antibiotics and household cleaners. Iron-deficiency anemia is very common in young women. Women need nutrition and they need to be CLEAN from toxins. Here's a nutrition tip for all women -- berries are your friends.

While women's role in the food chain is essential to produce that all-important resource, food, it paradoxically does not guarantee women even minimum levels of nutrition. Women are often responsible for producing and preparing food for the household, so their knowledge or lack thereof about nutritions effect on the entire family. Women with adequate stores of iron and other micronutrients are less likely to suffer fatal infections and are more likely to survive bleeding during and after childbirth. Women in developing countries are also regularly deficient in vitamin A, iodine, and energy. Women of child-bearing age are recommended to take folic acid supplements and consume a folic-rich diet. Women are also at higher risk for developing osteoporosis and need more calcium and vitamin D to prevent it. Studies showed that women with vitamin D insufficiency absorb less than 10 percent of available calcium.

However, even among the poor, different groups of women are affected differently by macro development policies, such as the commercialization of agriculture or family planning. The conflict between women's (economic) earning role and (biological and social) mothering role results to some degree in a squeeze on child care, with consequences for child health and nutrition. While women will be mothers too, motherhood is just one part of the inexorable life cycle. We need programs to increase women's awareness, self-confidence, and motivation to act. Men must be educated about the cost to society of neglecting women and the need for affirmative action for women, which arises both from the fact of their greater work burden and their unique reproductive roles. The issue of women's nutrition status and roles is crucial to the proposal for nutrition as a basic right for all in the 1990s, in which human development goals are paramount over economic goals. Programming for women's health must extend beyond their role as mothers to encompass their non-reproductive and work-related energy and health needs.

The nutrition tips for women broadcast on the news often imply that nutrition may magically cure all kinds of diseases. The role of nutrition is to feed our bodies. 1 nutrition tip for women is to regularly include iron-rich foods such as meat, shellfish, beans and enriched cereals in your diet. The effects of high levels of protein-energy malnutrition and anemia among women. The nutritional handicap accumulated in the life of a woman is passed on to the next generation through low birth weight, which considerably reduces survival and jeopardizes growth. The ultimate constraint of time affects the extent to which women can acquire nutritional goods and services and allocate them to improving their own well-being or that of their families. The best way to give your body the balanced nutrition it needs is by eating a variety of nutrient-packed foods every day. In some respects, men and women have different nutritional needs, largely due to differences in male and female hormones.

"If you look at the current federal dietary guidelines for kids, there is no difference in nutritional needs for males and females until age 9," says Elaine Turner, PhD, RD, associate professor in the department of Food Science and Human Nutrition at the University of Florida in Gainesville. Pregnancy drives the role of women and nutrition. If you need fewer calories, the calories you take in need to pack a lot of nutritional punch. One way that traditionally-minded woman can continue to keep their strength and health within the cycles of the creation,is through the use of berry plants. Remember, too that although berry plants have much nutritional value, they are only meant to supplement and enhance a well-balanced diet.

Anemia is the most common form of malnutrition, afflicting an estimated 47 percent of women worldwide, and anemia in pregnancy is one of the leading causes of maternal death. For maximum effect, improving women's nutrition should begin long before pregnancy. Improving nutrition by maintaining a healthy diet before and during pregnancy and also during lactation can help to ensure adequate gestational weight gain, prevent weight loss during lactation, help strengthen the immune system, and delay HIV disease progression. Good nutrition is important for all pregnant and lactating women irrespective of their HIV status. Ignorance about the symptoms of malnutrition, such as the lethargy and depression caused by iron deficiency, may be dismissed as "normal" or unimportant, further exacerbating the problem. Addressing women's malnutrition has a range of positive effects because healthy women can fulfill their multiple roles generating income, ensuring their families' nutrition, and having healthy children more effectively and thereby help advance countries' socioeconomic development. Well-nourished mothers are more likely to have infants with healthy birth weights, and such children are less likely to ever suffer from malnutrition. For reasons including women's reproductive biology, low social status, poverty, and lack of education, they suffer from nutritional imbalances. After the first year of life adolescent girls are particularly vulnerable to malnutrition.

Nutritional Sports Supplements

The recent steroid scandal involving Yankees' third baseman, Alex Rodriguez has once again thrust steroid-use and athletic performance aids to the front pages of newspapers everywhere—prompting many to ask exactly how many athletes use performance enhancers.

Because professional sports are so competitive, many players use some type of aid, device or procedure that may enhance performance. Many of these are legal and some are even natural supplements which produce highly effective results. The major difference between the two is in the way they work inside the body.

Drugs have higher risk of side effects or may be addictive with repeated use. For this reason, some drugs such as ephedra, amphetamines, and anabolic/androgenic/designer steroids, have been banned by sports organizations. In contrast, natural supplements have fewer known side effects. They work by aiding the body's natural ability to reach maximum levels of performance and endurance.

Natural Sports Supplements
Recently research in the field of natural and herbal sports supplements has advanced. Studies show positive results through clinical trials conducted over many years--providing research to support the use of herbal supplementation. By nutritionally supporting the body, you can provide it with the building blocks necessary to enhance not only sports performance, but also for supporting the health of the general population.

Natural supplements are legal and easily available. Here are a few common nutritional supplements for athletes and how each of these work in the body and could help to naturally enhance performance.

Multi-Vitamins
This includes essential vitamins, minerals and bioflavonoids that can be used as co-factors for enhancing digestion. For an athlete, intense practice and workouts can deplete the body's storage of vitamins and minerals. Those involved in sports and training, as well as those who live sedentary lives need a daily multi-vitamin to support good health.1

Amino Acids
Amino acids are protein- building structures. A protein shake, consumed one hour after a workout, can help to build muscle mass more quickly. Protein is also necessary for non-sports persons as well, especially when diets are vegan or subsist on junk foods.2

Hydration Drinks
Those who work out and profusely lose vital salts and minerals through perspiration need to replenish and refuel their bodies with fluids containing electrolytes. Some hydration drinks contain isotonic salts, minerals, and glucose to rehydrate the body.4

L-Glutamine
This nutrient nutritionally helps to strengthen muscles and supports immune health. 5

Glucosamine
Studies show glucosamine sulfate can nutritionally help to ease pain and inflammation associated with joints. Athletes who overwork their joints as well as those who suffer from various joint pains and joint injury find glucosamine supplementation beneficial in restoring joint health. 6

Creatine
Creatine, or phosphocreatine, is a protein building block. Creatine nutritionally supports muscles in manufacturing adenosine triphosphate (ATP). ATP, stores and transports energy in cells and helps to provide quick bursts of explosive energy. It also helps to build muscle mass more quickly and reduces recovery time between workouts.7

Green Tea Extract
Green tea has thermogenic properties and is used to nutritionally help the body burn fat more quickly. Those on a diet may find drinking green tea supports quicker weight loss.8

Resveratrol
Resveratrol is a powerful antioxidant found in the skin of red grapes. Studies show that resveratrol nutritionally builds athletic stamina and supports heart health.9

Nutritional supplements should be used in combination with a healthy diet and a good training program. Supplements can effectively help to build muscle mass, support fat loss, and improve stamina and athletic performance.

Fatigue in Early Pregnancy, Can be Normal or it May be a Sign You are Nutritionally Depleted

Is it normal to have fatigue in early pregnancy? Read on to discover why fatigue in early pregnancy happens and what you can do to make sure you are not nutritionally depleted.

Pregnancy is an amazing event in a woman's life. No matter how long or how hard we study pregnancy we will never fully understand why women get so many very early pregnancy symptoms such as pregnancy fatigue.

From the moment of conception, the developing fetus needs lots of vitamins and minerals to ensure normal cell and organ growth and to prevent congenital abnormalities. As the developing fetus grows it also grows a living organ called the placenta, that allows vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, oxygen, nutrients, hormones and blood to cross from the mother's blood supply to the developing fetus.

Mothers are givers by nature and during pregnancy they unconditionally and continuously give all their reserve nutrients to their offspring in an attempt to grow a healthy baby. Under normal pregnancy this is be a huge physical drain on the mother's physical energy level and this is why pregnant women are given pre-natal vitamins.

Prior pregnancy many men and women are depleted in vitamins and minerals because of our lifestyles and the food we eat. Vitamins and minerals are essential in building healthy cells and organs. Many miscarriages are caused by abnormal eggs and sperms due to the lack of adequate vitamins and minerals in the cells prior to conception.

A body lacking vitamins and minerals is in a depleted state which can cause physical disease, irritability, depression and fatigue. The stress of pregnancy on top of this depletion results in a lot of pregnancy fatigue.

Pregnant women need more sleep than normal as when they sleep there is less physical stress on the mother's body. Therefore sleep gives the mother a better chance of adjusting to all the demands of pregnancy.

It is very important as soon as you know you are pregnant to take vitamins and minerals, especially folic acid (600-micrograms) as folic acid helps prevent congenital abnormalities. If you are not already supplementing your diet with vitamins and minerals, then purchase some until you have an appointment with your health care provider.

Better still, if you are planning to get pregnant, start supplementing your diet with vitamins and minerals to make your body more nutritionally sound, reduce miscarriage risk and reduce the degree of fatigue during early pregnancy.

OK I have spoken a lot about vitamins, minerals and antioxidants and you may be wondering how could you be nutritionally depleted or even be tired if you already supplement. Well the truth is most people supplement with vitamins only and they supplement with a pill delivery system which has a very poor absorption rate. The best way to supplement is a liquid delivery system which has about a 95% absorption rate. Vitamins alone are not good enough, the body needs minerals for optimal health and minerals are necessary to absorb vitamins. Health and nutrition

Due to the fast paced and stressful lifestyle most of us lead, it has become very difficult to get regular exercise. As a double whammy, this time crunch has also led to us depending more and more on fast food and junk food which are high in sugar, salt and fats. This combination of lethargy and junk food has led to a decline in the health of the people in most advanced countries and is slowly taking the form of an epidemic.

Eating properly and doing even moderate exercise regularly are two steps to ensure that you stay fit and are not hampered by various diseases such as diabetes, heart ailments, stress, anxiety and others. These so called 'lifestyle diseases' have become quite common in the first world and although these are not mass killers like the plague or cholera, they do lead to a lessening in the health and thereby the productivity of the workforce of the country. A conscious change in lifestyle is the only way to counter this problem.

Insomnia: How Lack of Sleep Can Damage Your Health

What is Insomnia?

The average person spends approximately 1/3 of his or her life sleeping. Although we do not yet fully understand either the purpose or the mechanics of sleep, we do know that an insufficient amount can have far-reaching consequences: our work performance, our personal relationships, and our physical and mental health all depend on getting an appropriate amount of rest.

The inability to fall asleep or to stay asleep throughout the night is a condition known as insomnia, and it is among the most common of all medical complaints; approximately 1/3 of all people experience a period of insomnia at least once during their lifetime. Individuals with insomnia typically experience at least one of the following symptoms:

- Difficulties falling asleep;
- Inability to stay asleep, or waking up too early;
- Sleepiness during the day;
- Fatigue or lack of energy;
- Irritability;
- Headache;
- Decreased ability to concentrate;
- Increased errors or accidents;
- Depression and/or anxiety;
- Continual worry about sleep.

Health Risks of Insomnia

If you are not getting the sleep that you need, your insomnia may eventually lead to serious consequences for your health. In the short term, your alertness and focus are impaired, which can have a negative effect on your school or work performance. Relationship problems may result from irritability due to lack of sleep, while fatigue may prevent you from participating in your normal activities.

In the long-term, the complications of insomnia can be even more severe. Hypertension, cardiovascular disease, obesity, and mood disorders are all associated with chronic insomnia; these conditions can be life-threatening, and they will certainly reduce the quality of your life.

What Causes Insomnia?

Insomnia is symptomatic of a large number of physiological disorders; if you are having difficulty sleeping, chances are that an underlying health problem is to blame. Illness, infection, mental health disorders, and medications can all keep you from getting the proper amount of rest. Hormone and neurotransmitter imbalances can affect your body's ability to fall asleep, and dietary deficiencies can cause insomnia, as well. Exposure to toxic elements such as heavy metals, molds, and other environmental pollutants have also been shown to impair sleep.

Finding the Cause of Insomnia

By determining what is causing your insomnia, your health care provider will be better able to help you design a plan for managing your sleep problem. To find out what is keeping you up at night, your doctor may ask you a series of questions about your lifestyle, your sleeping environment, and even the sleep habits of your partner. A variety of lab tests can also be useful in pinpointing the cause of your insomnia in the event that a health problem is involved.

Managing Insomnia

The first step to getting back to sleep is to treat the underlying cause. Establishing good sleep habits may include nutritional support, exercise, detoxification, and incorporating a relaxation technique into your daily routine.

Good sleep hygiene is important for getting the rest you need. By following the guidelines listed here, you will find yourself drifting off easily, without the constant worry about getting enough sleep every night.

- Stick to a constant sleep schedule, with a consistent bed time and wake-up time;
- Avoid bright lights (including the television and computer) for at least two hours before bedtime;
- Do not exercise within three hours of bedtime;
- Make sure your bedroom is for sleeping - keep the TV, computer, and any other distractions in another room;
- Make sure your sleeping environment is cool, dark and quiet;
- Avoid caffeine, smoking, and alcohol, especially before bed;
- Don't eat right before you go to bed;
- Try a relaxation exercise such as deep breathing before you turn in.

Over-the-counter and prescription sleep medications are best avoided; they may help you fall asleep, but they can be habit-forming, and they have a variety of negative side effects. By identifying the cause of your insomnia and making some adjustments to your lifestyle, you should be able to overcome your sleep difficulties naturally.

Juicing For Health and Nutrition

When I was married in 1973, the first breakfast I prepared for my new husband was an omelet with alfalfa sprouts, and a glass of fresh apple, carrot and celery juice. He thought I had lost my mind.  However, little my little, as I introduced more juices into our meals, he began to notice how much better he was feeling.  He had more energy, better attitude and slept more soundly.  Juicing has been a part of my family's way of life since the 1970's. I have gone through many juicing machines, and have found the one I am happiest with. Juicing today is a lot easier than it was even a few years ago. They are more efficient, easier to clean and extract as much of the 'good stuff' as possible. Juicing is a part of our everyday routine.

Most people who are 'into' juicing know that a man named Dr. Norman W. Walker in the 1930's introduced the first juicer. He lived to be 109 years old and healthier than most of us are in our twenties. Juicing is one of the oldest forms of getting the benefits from fresh fruits and vegetables and the use of juices as medicine dates back thousands of years to biblical times and ancient cultures in India, Polynesia, Peru and Native America.

A friend of mine recently had a severe acid/alkaline imbalance, being way over acidic.  Juicing is one of the best things you can do to restore balance to your system by creating a more alkaline environment. It is a well-established fact and backed up by years of research and numerous studies that eating green foods will help restore the body's ph to a balanced state.  If you do not believe this, buy yourself a good juicer and some ph testing strips. You will see the difference for yourself. Diseases such as cancer, candida, and viruses cannot live in an oxygenated, alkaline environment. Most people today are over-acidic because of the foods we eat. We don't get enough fruits and vegetables and eat too much meat. Some of the conditions related to a ph imbalance on the acidic side are: arthritis, cancer, chronic fatigue, depression, IBS (irritable bowel syndrome), osteoporosis, skin conditions, weight gain and numerous other symptoms.  I test my ph every day. I usually know before testing I am acid because my skin breaks out and I just ache all over.  There are many things that will cause an over acid imbalance including stress, toxins and pollution.

It is the chlorophyll in the plants that help alkalize the body.  There is no way we can eat enough green vegetables to get the benefits of the amount of chlorophyll needed to balance out the ph. If you are over acidic, then you will want to juice green vegetables. Celery is particularly affective in bringing the body to the alkaline side. When I know I am acid, I juice a cucumber, four or five stalks of celery, and an apple. After thirty minutes I will test my ph again and it never fails to be perfectly balanced.  Restoring balance to the ph system of your body is just one of the many benefits of juicing.

The National Cancer Institute recommends eating five serving of fruit and three servings of vegetables a day. Juicing provides a quick, easy way to get the recommended daily servings of fruit and veggies. The nutrients from juice are more easily absorbed and results seen faster than eating the fruit or vegetable.

In a quote from The Natural Way to Vibrant Health, Dr. Norman Walker says, "I can truthfully say I am never conscious of my age. Since I reached maturity, I have never been aware of being any older, and I can say with equivocation or mental reservation, that I feel more alive, alert and full of enthusiasm today than when I was 30 years old. I still feel my best years are ahead of me. I never think of birthdays or celebrate them. Today, I can truthfully say I am enjoying vibrant health. I don't mind telling people how old I am: I AM AGELESS."

How many of us can say that at any age?

Nutrition: The Super Foods that keep you Healthy

Get ready to experience a volume of information of the healthiest foods in the world. Here is a list of the top ten super foods that most health experts agree on. You should tell everyone you know about these foods and enjoy them at your next meal. From fruits and vegetables, to whole grains, nuts, beans and legumes, this power-packed nutritional inventory will take you into the best years of your life and beyond.

Fruits

  1. Cantaloupe
    Only a quarter of cantaloupe provides almost all the vitamin A needed in one day. Since the beta-carotene in a cantaloupe converts to vitamin A, you get both nutrients at once. These vision-strengthening nutrients may help reduce the risk of developing cataracts. Like an orange, cantaloupe is also an excellent source of vitamin C, which helps our immune system. It is also is a good source of vitamin B6, dietary fiber, folate, niacin, and potassium, which helps maintain good blood sugar levels and metabolism. This pale orange power fruit may help reduce our risk of heart disease, stroke, and cancer.

  2. Blueberries
    These mildly sweet (and sometimes tangy) berries offer a high capacity to destroy free radicals that can cause cancer. Low in calories, they offer antioxidant phytonutrients called anthocyanidins, which enhance the effects of vitamin C. These antioxidants may help prevent cataracts, glaucoma, varicose veins, hemorrhoids, peptic ulcers, heart disease and cancer.

Vegetables

3: Tomatoes
Tomatoes help us fight against heart disease and cancers such as colorectal, prostate, breast, endometrial, lung, and cancer of the pancreas. Tomatoes are also good sources of vitamin C, A, and K. In a 2004 study, it was found that tomato juice alone can help reduce blood clotting.

Fresh, organic tomatoes deliver three times as much of the cancer-fighting carotenoid lycopene. Even organic ketchup is better for you than regular ketchup! Look for tomato pastes and sauces that contain the whole tomato (including peels) because you will absorb 75% more lycopene and almost two times the amount of beta-carotene.

4: Sweet Potatoes
As an excellent source of vitamin A, C, and manganese, sweet potatoes are also a good source of copper, dietary fiber, vitamin B6, potassium and iron. Those who are smokers or prone to second-hand smoke may benefit greatly from this root vegetable that helps protect us against emphysema.

For a unique dessert, cube a cooked sweet potato and slice a banana. Then lightly pour maple syrup over the top and add a dash or two of cinnamon. Add chopped walnuts for an even healthier kick.

5: Spinach and Kale

A cancer-fighter and cardio-helper, spinach and kale top the list as far as green leafy vegetables are concerned. Much like broccoli, they provide an excellent source of vitamin A and C. Kale is a surprisingly good source of calcium at 25% per cup, boiled. Vitamin K is abundantly found in spinach as well, with almost 200% of the Daily Value available, to help reduce bone loss.

Whole Grains
6: Whole Grain Bread, Pasta and Brown Rice

Whether it's bread or pasta, the first thing to check for when purchasing whole grain bread and pasta is to make sure it is 100% whole grain. Remember to check the list of ingredients on the package. For example, look for the exact phrase "whole wheat flour" as one of the first ingredients listed in whole wheat bread. If it's not listed as such, then it's not whole grain. Wheat bran is a cancer-fighting grain that also helps us regulate our bowel movements.

Brown rice is also a better choice than refined grain (white rice) for the same reason as choosing whole wheat bread. Whole wheat flour or brown rice that turns into white flour or white rice actually destroys between 50-90% of vitamin B3, vitamin B1, vitamin B6, manganese, phosphorus, iron, and all of the dietary fiber and essential fatty acids we need. Even when processed white flour or white rice is "enriched," it is not in the same form as the original unprocessed kind. In fact, 11 nutrients are actually lost and are not replaced during the "enrichment" process!

Nuts
7: Walnuts

These nuts are packed with omega-3 fats, which is one of the "good" fats. A quarter cup of walnuts would take care of about 90% of the omega-3s needed in one day. Walnuts provide many health benefits including cardiovascular protection, better cognitive function, anti-inflammatory advantages relating to asthma, rheumatoid arthritis, and inflammatory skin diseases like eczema and psoriasis. They can even help against cancer and also support the immune system.

Beans and Legumes

8: Black Beans and Lentils

While black beans are a good source of fiber that can lower cholesterol, so are lentils. The high fiber content in both black beans and lentils helps to maintain blood sugar levels. Also a fat-free, high quality protein with additional minerals and B-vitamins, black beans and lentils fill you up and don't expand your waistline.

A complete, one-stop source of using a variety of beans and lentils comes easy when you can find a bag of 15-bean mix (includes black beans, lentils, navy, pinto, red, kidney, etc.) at the grocery store. Consider making a delicious soup with the addition of tomatoes, onions, garlic and your favorite spices with this bean mixture.

Dairy

9: Skim Milk and Yogurt

Skim milk (or low-fat) helps to promote strong bones, offering an excellent source of calcium, vitamin D, and vitamin K. These nutrients help protect colon cells from cancer-causing chemicals, bone loss, migraine headaches, premenstrual symptoms, and childhood obesity. Recent studies also show that overweight adults lose weight, especially around the midsection, when consuming low-fat dairy such as skim milk and yogurt.

Yogurt also includes the essential nutrients such as phosphorous and vitamin B2, vitamin B12, vitamin B5, zinc, potassium, and protein. Yogurt's live bacterial cultures also provide a wealth of health benefits that may help us live longer and strengthen our immune system.

Seafood

10: Salmon

Salmon is high in protein, low in saturated fat and high in omega-3 fats (the essential fatty acids that are also found in those walnuts mentioned earlier). Salmon is a heart-healthy food and is recommended to eat at least twice a week. When choosing salmon, it's best to stay away from farm raised and select wild instead. Research studies show that farmed salmon may cause cancer because it may carry high levels of carcinogenic chemicals known as polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs).

Other

Green Tea and "Power" Water

Although not food per say, the health benefits of these beverages are worthy of mentioning.

Green tea has beneficial phytonutrients and lower levels of caffeine than all other teas. The more research studying green tea, the more health benefits are found. A cancer fighter as well, green tea has antioxidant effects that lower risks of bacterial or viral infections to cardiovascular disease, cancer, stroke, periodontal disease, and osteoporosis.

Water packed with vitamins and/or naturally sweetened fruit are also the newest trend. Some offer a full day's supply of vitamin C while others promise no artificial sweeteners with a full, fruity taste.

As you can see, the top ten super foods are worth every bite (or sip). Now that you know which foods can help save your life, what's more important than investing in your health?

A Link Between Oral Health and Nutrition in Texas

According to the latest medical research, there is a correlation between a healthy mouth and a healthy body. Most Texans understand the popular link between healthy eating to prevent heart disease and keeping a normal body weight. Now individuals in Dallas, Houston, Austin and the rest of Texas need to think about food decisions to benefit the health of their mouths.

Sure, all that sugary food contributes to cavities, but there are other connections that link our diets and our mouths.

The status of our mouth can tell a lot about what we put into it. A poor diet can cause health issues for individuals in Texas including chronic bad breath, but it can also cause oral health problems like periodontal disease. This is the inflammation and destruction of the tissues and structures that hold our teeth in place. You can get everything from mouth sores, tooth pain and tooth loss, and that can lead to a downward spiral of other health concerns. Health issues with an individual's mouth can happen at any age, not just with the elderly.

Once periodontal disease starts, it can worsen to other conditions related to diet, including uncontrolled diabetes, cardiovascular disease, osteoporosis and poor immune status. Other oral risk factors include poor oral hygiene, smoking and stress. On top of it all, inadequate calories and nutrients don't allow for repair and maintenance of oral tissues, even with the best immune system.

Aside from the increased risk of periodontal disease, with uncontrolled diabetes, there is also the increased concern for cavities and bacterial or fungal growth in the mouth. That is because of the higher sugar level in the saliva that washes the teeth. Furthermore, diabetes can increase the risk of mouth infections because wound healing is compromised.

In addition, studies exist that have linked an increased risk of periodontal disease to obesity and insulin resistance. This is because they appear to be connected with increased inflammation in the body.

Other factors that can also contribute to mouth problems include "dry mouth." This condition can increase the risk of cavities and other mouth problems. The increased frequency of acidic foods/beverages or acid in the mouth from vomiting -- linked to eating disorders like bulimia -- or esophageal reflux (GERD) can wear tooth enamel, causing tooth erosion.

Even some mouth and throat cancers may be diet related. Most importantly, a diet high in fruits and vegetables may be beneficial in reducing the risk of some oral-related cancers, and may be critical to the overall health of the gum tissues.

A recent survey indicates that about 42 percent of children and adolescents age 6 to 16 years have some level of tooth decay. In adults, it is about 90 percent.

With some age groups in Texas, the number of cavities has declined over the past few years. Yet tooth decay is still a major issue in infants and preschool children. One reason is prolonged or inappropriate bottle-feeding. Plus, sweetened beverages or a high intake of fruit juice and processed foods seem to be major contributors to tooth problems with babies and young children.

In adolescents and young adults, intake of sweetened and/or acidic beverages, like soda or sports drinks, is also a big problem. Processed or sweetened snack foods not only directly contribute to tooth problems, but also often replace a diet of healthy foods needed for oral health. Many age groups don't consume enough recommended intake of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and other less processed nutrient-rich foods that can benefit oral and whole body health.

Some recent studies show a relationship between vitamin D intake and the risk of periodontal disease. Surprisingly, many Texans show some level of vitamin D deficiency.

Dentists and physicians recommend that individuals include omega 3 fatty acids and active cultures, like those in yogurt, in their diet to help to reduce the risk of inflammation and boost the immune system.

Minding your mouth and its health will certainly affect you as you age, and eventually your wallet as well.

Boost Colon Health With Nutrition and Digestive Enzymes

A healthy colon is the basis for a healthy body, with most of not realizing exactly how important a healthy colon is for obtaining and maintaining optimal wellness. When searching for a healthy body, colon health should be a primary concern, as it is the source for a lot of diseases and health problems. A healthy body depends on the maintenance of a healthy digestive system and elimination. Since food is the primary source of fuel for the body, if the wrong foods are eaten, the body will not function as it should.

The nutrients, vitamins, minerals, enzymes, amino acids, carbohydrates, and lipids that are found in the foods we eat are what give us the energy and resources that keep us alive. Sadly, the foods we eat are also loaded with toxins and unnecessary substances that prevent our body from removing waste properly. A healthy colon means a healthy body, so learning natural methods to achieve colon health is extremely important. Nutritious eating habits, cleansing diets, fiber sources, herbal remedies, and nutritional substances can all contribute to the body's well-being.

The food we eat ultimately determines how efficiently our entire body system works, with digestion being the body's first line of defense against foreign invaders that cause disease. The digestive system is also responsible for supplying cells with the nutrients and compounds that they need. There are many factors that contribute to digestive disorder including overeating cooked food and not enough raw foods, constipation, wrong combination of food, caffeine, alcohol, tobacco, sugar and sweets, white flour products, stress, any imbalance in the body, lack of hydrochloric acid and enzymes, Candida overgrowth, colon and liver congestion, allergies, hiatal hernia, gallbladder problems, ulcers, and heart problems.

Americans usually cause the most harm to themselves because of the types and amounts of food that they eat. In order to break down food, the body uses hydrochloric acid that is found in the stomach. This acid is actually strong enough to dissolve metal and is used in the stomach to neutralize the inappropriate substances, toxins, and bacteria that enter the body through the food that we eat daily. On occasion, the stomach and the acid inside breaks down and digestive malfunctions result.

There are many nutrients that are recommended to assist in proper digestion. Digestive enzymes are critical for digestion of any food, with acidophilus being important for proper bowel function. Hydrochloric acid is crucial for the assimilation of vitamins and minerals, especially vitamin C and calcium. B-complex vitamins promote a healthy digestive tract and assist enzymes in the metabolism of proteins, fats, and carbohydrates. Sodium, which is stored in the stomach wall and joints, neutralizes the acidity in the body and is needed when there is a deficiency of hydrochloric acid.

With out hydrochloric acid in the stomach, calcium, an essential mineral can not break down and is not properly absorbed in the stomach. Fiber, essential for proper digestion and elimination of food, reduces the absorption of fat, inhibits bad estrogens from absorbing into the bloodstream, and helps to maintain a healthy digestive tract.

Additionally herbal aids such as capsicum, garlic, gentian, ginger, goldenseal, licorice, papaya, and psyllium powder are great for assisting with digestion. Taking a good digestive enzyme is the first step to promoting a healthy digestive system and properly function colon. As we age, digestive functions will decline which causes disorders such as fatigue due to mal-absorption. Those over 50 should take a digestive aid on their heaviest meal to ensure that proper digestion is happening and good health will continued free form disease.
